So I guess I'll start...

Started reading the book all ready and I realized that we probably don't have all the same copy, meaning the pages might be off so yeah, always include the chapter...

behind the cut:
comments on the first page of the book
Chapter 1: page 5
Chapter 3
Chapter 4: page 32

Okay, the first page of the book, I hated it. It sounded so boring all the descriptive crap. It wasn't until two pages into the book that I was like okay....not so bad.

Chapter 1 page 5

The dawn came, but no day. In the gray sky a red sun appeared, a dim red circle that gave little light, like dust and as that day advanced, the dusk slipped back toward darkness, and the wind cried and whimpered over the fallen corn.

I thought that passage, along with the sentence that began with 'When the night came, it was black night...' Both passages I thought conveyed the feeling of hopelessness and desperateness well. I loved the wording and the imagery that I got from it.

Chapter 3

That entire story about the turtle was just horrible with that damn truck swerving to hit him. That was messed up. I can't help but wonder what sort of foreshadowing this entails...

Chapter 4 page 32

"There ain't no sin and there ain't no virtue. There's just stuff people do. It's all part of the same thing. And some of the things folks do is nice, and some ain't nice, but that's as far as any mans got a right to say."

"Why do we got to hang it on God or Jesus? Maybe, I figgered, maybe it's all men an' women we love; maybe that's the Holy Sperit-the human sperit"

I really loved those two quotes from the former preacher. I was actually surprised to find something that profound and honest way in the beginning of the story.

Okay then, and this is what I think of the main characters I've met so far

I don't much care for Joad. I suppose as a main character, he has the needed and expected character flaws, but so far, nothing has endeared me to him. He's all ready admitted to doing time and I won't say for what just yet in case you didn't read it yet but it almost seems as if he's proud of it.
And the preacher, well you sort of feel bad for him because he's been practically kicked out of society for doing what he does and now he's just vagabonding around with nowhere to go and nothing to do.

Okay then, I'd love to hear what everyone else thinks about what I've posted or about your own thoughts on everything. XD
